چکیده

We combine our compilation of photometry of M31 globular clusters and probable cluster candidates with new near-infrared photometry for 30 objects. Using these data we determine the globular cluster luminosity function (GCLF) in multiple filters for the M31 halo clusters. We find a GCLF peak and dispersion V 0 0 = 16.84 ± 0.11, σt = 0.93± 0.13 (Gaussian σ = 1.20± 0.14), consistent with previous results. The halo GCLF peak colors (e.g. B0 0 −V 0 0 ) are consistent with the average cluster colors. We also measure V -band GCLF parameters for several other subsamples of the M31 globular cluster population. The inner third of the clusters have a GCLF peak significantly brighter than that of the outer clusters (∆V 0 ≈ 0.5 mag). Dividing the sample by both galactocentric distance and metallicity, we find that the GCLF also varies with metallicity, as the metal-poor clusters are on average 0.36 mag fainter than the metalrich clusters. Our modeling of the catalog selection effects suggests that they are not the cause of the measured GCLF differences, but a more-complete, less-contaminated M31 cluster catalog is required for confirmation. Our results imply that dynamical destruction is not the only factor causing variation in the M31 GCLF: metallicity, age, and cluster initial mass function may also be important. Subject headings: galaxies: individual (M31) – galaxies: star clusters – globular clusters: general Based partially on observations made with the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope, obtained from the data archive at Space Telescope Science Institute. N ov 2 00 7 M 31 N - 2007 - 06 b : A Nova in the M 31 Globular Cluster Bol 111

We report spectroscopic observations of the nova M31N-2007-06b, which was found to be spatially coincident with the M31 globular cluster Bol 111. This nova is the first out of more than 700 discovered in M31 over the past century to be associated with one of the galaxy’s globular clusters. A total of three spectra of the nova were obtained 3, 6, and 36 days post discovery. The data reveal broad...

Variations in the number of globular clusters per unit galaxy luminosity, which is the specific frequency, and the mass of globular clusters per unit total available mass, are reviewed. Correlations with galaxy luminosity and morphology, and with the properties of the associated galactic clusters are discussed, as are the color distributions of globular cluster populations. Several models for t...

We present new BVI ground-based photometry and VI space-based photometry for the globular cluster M92 (NGC 6341) and examine luminosity functions in B, V, and I containing over 50,000 stars ranging from the tip of the red giant branch to several magnitudes below the main sequence turn off. Once corrected for completeness, the observed luminosity functions agree very well with theoretical models...

The Globular Cluster Luminosity Function as a Distance Indicator : Dynamical

The dynamical evolution of the globular cluster systems in galaxies is predicted, based on the standard dynamical theory normalized to the example of the Milky Way. The major processes varying with the galactocentric distance are the tidal shocks and dynamical friction. Our simple model explains, on a quantitative basis, the observed diierences of the inner and outer populations of globular clu...

We present the luminosity function to very faint magnitudes for the globular clusters in M87, based on a 30 orbit Hubble Space Telescope (HST) WFPC2 imaging program. The very deep images and corresponding improved false source rejection allow us to probe the mass function further beyond the turnover than has been done before. We compare our luminosity function to those that have been observed i...
